2025 Ram 1500 Receives Top Honors For Engine Performance

The 2025 Ram 1500's powerplant has been acknowledged in Wards 10 Best Engines and Propulsion list.

The Ram 3.0-liter Hurricane High Output Straight-Six Turbo Engine was reviewed by a panel of automotive experts, who gave it top honors for its exceptional performance, fuel efficiency and cutting-edge technology capabilities.

The award marks the eighth consecutive year a Stellantis propulsion system was recognized by Wards for excellence. It also is the second time a 3.0-liter Hurricane twin turbo engine was included in the coveted list.

”We engineered our Hurricane twin turbo engines to be powerful, efficient, robust and versatile, delivering performance that enhances the driving experience both on- and off-road while towing,” said Micky Bly of Stellantis.

“The engine exemplifies our ability to satisfy a range of truck customer needs offering power, performance, capability and class-leading NHV in one package.”

Hurricane’s High Output Straight-Six Turbo generates 540 hp and 521 Ib-ft of torque. It is paired with a TorqueFlite eight-speed automatic transmission for improved engine performance and a driving experience.

Turbocharged performance

The addition of two high-flow turbochargers enhances fuel economy and delivers rapid throttle response. These turbochargers also enable the engine to generate substantial torque for hauling heavy loads and starting effortlessly in cold weather.

A fuel injection system sends fuel directly into the combustion chamber and reduces nitrogen oxide emissions harmful to the environment.

Two performance options

The 2025 Ram 1500 offers 3.0-liter Hurricane I-6 Standard Output and High Output engine options. Both engines provide more horsepower and torque than naturally aspirated and boosted six-cylinder engines.

A reinforced block and alloy oil pan supports the 3.0-liter Hurricane I-6 engine, making it the most powerful Ram engine ever produced. High-strength steel bolts firmly secure all rotating components, including the connecting rods and forged steel crankshaft.

Ward’s review

Wards 10 Best Engines & Propulsion Systems list is an annual award given to the top 10 engines and propulsion systems in the automotive industry. The list is compiled by experts from WardsAuto and appraises new vehicles based on the following criteria:

  • Performance
  • Fuel efficiency
  • Refinement
  • Technology
  • Value

”The Hurricane High-Output Straight-Six Turbo packs a powerful punch from a launch to well past legal speed while also delivering promised fuel economy that represents an improvement over the HEMI® V-8 it replaces,” said Bob Gritzinger, Wards editor-in-chief.

“I like the assured rumble from the High-Output I-6. This engine should sway even the most rabid V-8 buyer into the 6-cylinder family.”
