Jeep has etched its place in American lore during World War II and later became a symbol of driving adventure. The iconic brand is celebrating its 80th anniversary with a look back and an impressive line-up of versatile vehicles.
“After nearly 80 years, the Jeep brand remains true to the original SUV by continuing to deliver legendary 4x4 capability that has enabled countless adventures and open-air freedom,” said Jim Morrison of Jeep North America.
The first Jeep was mass produced in 1941 as the Willy’s MA, designating “military” and version “A.” The US produced 650,000 of the Willy’s MA model and deployed them among allies in Europe.
Officers pressed the four-wheel drive, 65-HP Will’s MA into service for duties previously performed by horses--ferrying troops, delivering supplies, assisting medical units. The vehicle’s adaptability became legendary as the ubiquitous rectangular motorcar was outfitted as a snow plow along frozen European roads, trencher for communications, winch for pulling itself or other vehicles from a ditch and a reliable tow for munitions.
After the war, the vehicle continued to perform as a military vehicle but returning veterans also put it to work on farms across the country. The first civilian Jeep, or CJ-2, was introduced in 1945.
